Pick, Slip, Scorer (PS2)

Great scorers all have one thing in common…they set great picks. Especially ones that play off the basketball. So how do you set a great pick? When you “head-hunt” to make legal contact with an opponent that delays them from reaching their desired position. So how does setting a great pick allow you to score? I will tell you! Setting a pick means one of 2 things will happen:

  1. It causes the opponent to be late to their defensive assignment, leaving the cutter wide open to score
  2. It causes the opponent to switch to defend the picker

In the case of #2, this is where the fun begins. Why? Because you become a scorer. This is why when you watch Stephen Curry play, you will see him set many picks.

There are 4 ways to become a scoring threat after you set a pick:

  1. Roll – You set the pick, your defender had to switch high, allowing you to roll low to the basket and score
  2. Pop – You set the pick, your defender had to help low, allowing you to “pop” high to the wing-extended to score
  3. Chase the Corner – You set the pick, your defender had to follow the cutter, allowing you to fade towards the corner to score
  4. I-Cut – You set the pick, your cutter/teammate faked using your pick and slipped to the basket, allowing you to cut back to the basketball in an “I” formation to score

With all of these picks, it is important to constantly communicate what you are doing to your teammates. In conclusion, this is why it is important to learn how to set a hard pick. Watch a video about this below:
